Schools should be aware that you may not be “out” at school – whether it be with their peers, teachers, staff, or administration – or at home with their families. The decision to share this information and with whom you choose to share it with is a personal choice. You may not wish to share with some people for reasons of safety, or simply because you do not feel it is necessary to share your sexual orientation, gender identity, chosen names or pronouns, or other personal information.
Queer students have the right to privacy with respect to their personal information, including information about their sexuality or gender identity. Schools should respect your privacy. If you do share personal information, you have the right to expect it will be kept confidential and not shared without your consent.
