Can My School Limit the Content of Learning Materials in School Libraries?

One important aspect of inclusion in the learning environment is having library materials that reflect queer relationships and experiences. Some school boards, like the Toronto District School Board, has guidelines requiring that librarians “acquire trans-positive fiction and non-fiction books for school libraries and encourage the circulation of books that teach about gender non-conforming people.”

However, some school boards and even provinces have excluded this content. If your school removes or refuses queer content, that may be a violation of your right to equality.

Advocacy in Action:

Pushing Back Against Book Bans in Alberta

In 2025, Alberta introduced new rules saying school libraries can’t carry books with explicit sexual content, and even “non-explicit sexual content” for students below Grade 10. At first, some schools removed hundreds of titles — including classics like 1984 and The Handmaid’s Tale. This sparked huge backlash.

After pushback and protest from students, teachers, and organizations (including the CCLA), the government paused and re-wrote the rules. Now, the book ban only applies to books with sexually explicit images.

The book ban was sparked by parent groups concerned that students will be exposed to 2SLGBTQIA+ content. Removing these books doesn’t just limit access to information—it can also send the harmful message that queer people, relationships, and families shouldn’t be talked about in schools. Inclusive libraries are a key part of safe and supportive school environments and banning books based on queer content is discriminatory. But this fight also shows something important: when students and allies push back, advocacy can create real change.
