pronouns at school?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p>Even though dignity is a very broad idea, the CCLA and many others believe that the idea of human dignity protects some very specific rights for queer students in schools, including the right to use your chosen name and pronouns in most school situations. Using proper names and pronouns for transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary students is essential to promoting human dignity and equality, and respecting people for who they are. There may be specific exceptions to a school\u2019s ability to use your chosen name and pronouns, such as on your official documents and where doing so would compromise your privacy (<a href=\"https:\/\/queerstudentrights.ca\/your-rights\/the-right-to-privacy-from-parents-peers-and-teachers\/\">see the Privacy section for more<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>All of Canada\u2019s provinces and territories acknowledge 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion in schools with varying levels of detail.<\/p>\n<p>Some provinces have specific guidelines for schools regarding use of chosen names and pronouns. This chart provides more information on the situation in specific provinces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"toggles \" data-br=\"\" data-starting=\"default\" data-style=\"minimal\"><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>British Columbia<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leaves policies for individual school boards to set, provided that schools follow the <em>British Columbia Human Rights Code<\/em>, which protects B.C. students from \u201cdiscrimination based on Indigenous identity, race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The province\u2019s guidelines suggest that schools allow students the right to self-identify, which includes the right to choose the name they wish to be addressed by and preferred pronouns. The guidelines also support students\u2019 right to confidentiality of their official and\/or preferred sex, gender, and name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicable Policy\/Guideline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/assets\/gov\/erase\/documents\/moe-sogi-policy-guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supporting Diverse Sexual Orientations, Gender Identities and Expressions<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Alberta<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If a student under the age of 16 requests that a new preferred name or pronoun be used for them by school staff when referring to the student in school, the school board will notify the student\u2019s parent of the request and seek the parent\u2019s consent for the usage of the new preferred name or pronoun. If the student is 16 years of age or over, the student\u2019s parent will be notified of the request, but will not require the parent\u2019s consent for usage.<\/p>\n<p>School staff cannot use a student\u2019s preferred name or pronouns until parental notification has occurred or, if relevant, the parent\u2019s consent is obtained. Where parental notification or the parental consent requirement is reasonably expected to cause emotional or psychological harm to the student, or the student requests access to assistance, the school board must ensure that the student is provided with counselling or other assistance prior to notifying the student\u2019s parent.<\/p>\n<p>See more below under \u201cLegal Challenges in Alberta and Saskatchewan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicable Policy\/Guideline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canlii.org\/en\/ab\/laws\/astat\/sa-2024-c-14\/latest\/sa-2024-c-14.html?resultId=10ac12e23c1541698712ac50e699df20&amp;searchId=2025-09-29T10:03:59:319\/597d6cccd48a42ce81b07d87f6197436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Education Amendment Act<\/em>, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Saskatchewan<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Education Amendment Act<\/em> states that a parent or guardian of a student under the age of 16 has the right to provide consent before teachers and other employees of the school use a student\u2019s new gender-related preferred name or gender identity at school. Until such time as the parent provides consent, school staff are not allowed to use a student\u2019s preferred name or pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>If it is reasonably expected that obtaining parental consent is likely to result in physical, mental or emotional harm to the student, \u201cthe principal shall direct the pupil to the appropriate professionals, who are employed or retained by the school, to support and assist the pupil in developing a plan to address the pupil\u2019s request with the pupil\u2019s parent or guardian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>See more below under \u201cLegal Challenges in Alberta and Saskatchewan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicable Policy\/Guideline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canlii.org\/en\/sk\/laws\/astat\/ss-2023-c-46\/latest\/ss-2023-c-46.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Education Amendment Act (Parents\u2019 Bill of Rights), <\/em>SS 2023, c 46<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Manitoba<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Guideline states that \u201call students have the right to choose the name by which they wish to be addressed,\u201d and indicate that school staff should consistently use the student\u2019s chosen name and pronoun \u201caccording to the student\u2019s wishes and direction, including masculine and feminine pronouns as well as gender-neutral pronouns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Guideline also states that \u201cstudents\u2019 prior consent must be obtained before disclosing their trans or gender diverse identity to their parents\/guardians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicable Policy\/Guideline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edu.gov.mb.ca\/k12\/docs\/support\/transgender\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Supporting Transgender and Gender Diverse Students in Manitoba Schools<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Ontario<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s Policy\/Program Memorandum 119 requires publicly funded school boards to \u201cdevelop, implement, and monitor an equity and inclusive education policy that includes a religious accommodation guideline,\u201d which must align with the <em>Ontario Human Rights Code. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Education\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/school-rules-provincial-code-conduct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Provincial Code of Conduct<\/a> that applies to schools states that all students and school community members must respect and treat others fairly, regardless of their sex, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation, among other factors. This requirement is consistent with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/90h19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ontario Human Rights Code<\/em><\/a>, which states: \u201c[e]very person has a right to equal treatment with respect to services, goods and facilities, without discrimination because of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status or disability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario Human Rights Commission\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohrc.on.ca\/en\/policy-preventing-discrimination-because-gender-identity-and-gender-expression\/7-forms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Policy on Preventing Discrimination Because of Gender Identity and Expression<\/em><\/a> considers \u201crefusing to refer to a person by their self-identified name and proper personal pronoun\u201d a form of gender-based harassment, which is prohibited discrimination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicable Policy\/Guideline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/document\/education-ontario-policy-and-program-direction\/policyprogram-memorandum-119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Policy\/Program Memorandum 119<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/school-rules-provincial-code-conduct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Provincial Code of Conduct<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Quebec<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quebec\u2019s <em>Measures <\/em>state that \u201c[a]ll trans and non-binary youth have the right to self-identify and to be addressed by their preferred first name and pronouns\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Measures<\/em> also recommend that school administration and staff do not disclose any information that might reveal the trans student\u2019s gender identity to any other individual, including their parents if the student is over 14 years old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicable Policy\/Guideline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fqde.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1718-020_BrochJeunesTrans-ANG_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Measures for openness to and support for trans and non-binary students: A guide for educational institutions<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>New Brunswick<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Policy 713 states that all students have the right and presumed capacity to self-identify and communicate their chosen first names and\/or pronouns, which will be used consistently by members of the school environment.<\/p>\n<p>Although parental awareness is encouraged throughout the policy, Policy 713 does not mandate parental disclosure \u2013 when a student is uncomfortable providing informed consent for such disclosure, the school must respect the student\u2019s wishes.<\/p>\n<p>Students 16 years of age and older may have formal recognition of their chosen name and pronouns, which includes the use of a chosen name on official records, such as report cards. Students under the age of 16 may informally use their chosen name and pronouns, but parental consent is required for formal use.<\/p>\n<p>See more below under \u201cAdvocacy in Action: Fighting Back Against Roll Backs in New Brunswick\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicable Policy\/Guideline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gnb.ca\/content\/dam\/gnb\/Departments\/ed\/pdf\/K12\/policies-politiques\/e\/713-2023-07-01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Policy 713: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Nova Scotia<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nova Scotia\u2019s Guidelines protect students\u2019 right to choose their name and pronouns, whether or not the student has legally changed their name or sex designation.<\/p>\n<p>Parental consent is requested for the usage of a preferred name, gender identity, and\/or gender expression for students from grades primary to 6. However, students from grades 7 to 12 who have the capacity of consent do not require a parent or guardian\u2019s consent. The Guidelines also emphasize the importance of having a student\u2019s prior permission before disclosing their transgender or gender-nonconforming identity to their parent(s) or guardian(s).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicable Policy\/Guideline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ssrce.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Guidelines-for-Supporting-Transgender-Students.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Guidelines for Supporting Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Students<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Newfoundland &amp; Labrador<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Guidelines<\/em> state that individuals may request to be addressed by their chosen name and\/or pronouns, and that staff and peers should consistently use a student\u2019s chosen name and pronouns as requested.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Guidelines<\/em> clarify that district and school staffs should \u201cmake every effort to seek student consent or consult with the student prior to parent class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Northwest Territories<\/a><\/h3><div><div Inclusion in Northwest Territories Schools<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle accent-color\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3 class=\"toggle-title\"><a href=\"#\" role=\"button\" class=\"nectar-inherit-h4 toggle-heading\"><i role=\"presentation\" class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Nunavut<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p><strong>Law:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nunavut\u2019s Policy states that school \u00a0environments must respect diversity, including gender identification, among many other characteristics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicable Policy\/Guideline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.nu.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/policies-legislations\/2023-12\/inclusive_education_policy_06_20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Education\u2019s Inclusive Education Policy<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"divider-wrap\" data-alignment=\"default\"><div style=\"height: 25px;\" class=\"divider\"><\/div><\/div><h3 style=\"color: #49479d;text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading vc_do_custom_heading\" >Legal Challenges in Alberta and Saskatchewan<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p>As part of suite of anti-transgender laws targeting healthcare, sports, and education, <strong>Alberta<\/strong> passed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canlii.org\/en\/ab\/laws\/astat\/sa-2024-c-14\/latest\/sa-2024-c-14.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Education Amendment Act<\/em>, <em>2024<\/em><\/a> restricting chosen name and pronoun usage in schools. As of 2025, Egale Canada and Skipping Stone have launched constitutional challenges against both the legislation that bans gender-affirming healthcare for minors, as well as the education policy that forcibly outs students to their parents or guardians when they request that a new preferred name or pronoun be used by school staff.<\/p>\n<p>The Government of <strong>Saskatchewan<\/strong> introduced similar laws around name and pronouns through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canlii.org\/en\/sk\/laws\/astat\/ss-2023-c-46\/latest\/ss-2023-c-46.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Parents\u2019 Bill of Rights<\/em><\/a> in 2023. This law also requires a parent\u2019s permission for teachers or school staff to use a trans or gender diverse student\u2019s chosen name or pronouns, thus forcibly outing students to their parents or guardians. The Government used section 33 of the <em>Charter <\/em>to pass this law, knowing that it was likely unconstitutional. Section 33 of the <em>Charter<\/em> is also called the Notwithstanding Clause and it allows a government to declare that any law can operate for a certain period of time despite the fact that the law may violate certain <em>Charter <\/em>rights.<\/p>\n<p>Egale Canada and UR Pride, a Regina non-profit, have challenged this law, however because the Notwithstanding Clause has been used to pass the law, unfortunately a court does not have the ability to strike the law down. However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canlii.org\/en\/sk\/skca\/doc\/2025\/2025skca74\/2025skca74.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saskatchewan Court of Appeal has ruled<\/a> that although it cannot strike the law down, the courts can still adjudicate whether or not the law is unconstitutional and make a declaration as such.<\/p>\n<p>These laws place deeply personal decisions in the hands of the government and schools. They force gender-diverse young people to choose between being outed to their parents\/guardians or be misgendered and deadnamed at school. This seriously interferes with students\u2019 dignity and autonomy. Both cases are still being litigated and have yet to reach a final determination. Nevertheless, the CCLA believes these laws are unconstitutional and violate students\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"fws_6a8f2c04a7adc\" data-midnight=\"\" data-column-margin=\"40px\" class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row inner_row vc_row-o-equal-height vc_row-flex vc_row-o-content-middle\"  style=\"\"><div class=\"row-bg-wrap\"> <div class=\"row-bg\" ><\/div> <\/div><div class=\"row_col_wrap_12_inner col span_12  left\">\n\t<div style=\"\" class=\"vc_col-sm-6 stats wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col child_column padding-4-percent inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"  data-using-bg=\"true\" data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"true\" data-bg-color=\"#8a8ace\" data-bg-opacity=\"0.2\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" ><div class=\"column-bg-overlay-wrap column-bg-layer\" data-bg-animation=\"none\"><div class=\"column-bg-overlay\" style=\"opacity: 0.2; background-color: #8a8ace;\"><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"nectar-highlighted-text font_size_3em \" data-style=\"text_outline\" data-outline-thickness=\"thick\" data-user-color=\"true\" style=\"color: #49479d;\" data-using-custom-color=\"false\" data-animation-delay=\"false\" data-color=\"\" data-color-gradient=\"\" style=\"\"><h3 class=\"vc_custom_heading vc_do_custom_heading\"><em>Advocacy in Action:<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div><h4 style=\"color: #49479d;text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading vc_do_custom_heading\" >Fighting Back Against Roll Backs in New Brunswick<\/h4>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p>In 2023, the Government of New Brunswick modified the province\u2019s policy on sexual orientation and gender identity in schools (known as Policy 713). The changes meant that students under the age of 16 needed parental permission for their school to use their chosen name and pronouns, including in a classroom setting. It also removed protections against misgendering or deadnaming trans and gender diverse students. In a legal challenge to Policy 713 brought by the CCLA, we argued that the modified policy violated students\u2019 rights to equality, to freedom of expression, and to liberty and security of the person. The <a href=\"https:\/\/ccla.org\/equality\/ccla-claims-victory-and-discontinues-policy-713-lawsuit-in-new-brunswick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government reversed these harmful changes<\/a> to Policy 713 in December 2024 after the legal challenge was brought.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n\n\t<div  class=\"vc_col-sm-6 wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col child_column no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"   data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p>There may be specific situations where schools are required to use your legal name \u2013 for example, they may be required to use it on official documents, such as transcripts or report cards. Some provinces and territories, including <a href=\"https:\/\/ssrce.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Guidelines-for-Supporting-Transgender-Students.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nova Scotia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edu.gov.mb.ca\/k12\/docs\/support\/transgender\/full_doc.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manitoba<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ece.gov.nt.ca\/sites\/ece\/files\/resources\/final_eng_web_lgbtq2s_guidelines_2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northwest Territories<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princeedwardisland.ca\/en\/publication\/md-2021-06-guidelines-for-respecting-accommodating-and-supporting-gender-identity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince Edward Island<\/a>, have policies which explicitly state that staff should adopt practices that avoid inadvertently disclosing a student\u2019s gender identity when they are required to use or report the student\u2019s legal name or sex designation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 style=\"color: #49479d;text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading vc_do_custom_heading\" >What About Free Speech?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p>Some people may feel or express that they are uncomfortable by the idea of using your chosen name and pronouns. Some have even argued that being asked to use a student\u2019s chosen name or pronouns violates their right to free expression because it forces them to say something with which they disagree. Free speech, like all other rights under the <em>Charter<\/em>, must be balanced against other rights and interests, including the equality, dignity, and safety of trans and gender diverse people. This is even more true in schools where teachers and administrators have more power than students and have a duty to protect students and their rights. Youth are also recognized as having particular vulnerabilities that must be protected.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is your dignity matters. Being called by the name and pronouns that reflect who you are is part of your rights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"fws_6a8f2c04ab6e2\" data-midnight=\"\" data-column-margin=\"none\" class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row inner_row vc_row-o-equal-height vc_row-flex vc_row-o-content-middle\"  style=\"\"><div class=\"row-bg-wrap\"> <div class=\"row-bg\" ><\/div> <\/div><div class=\"row_col_wrap_12_inner col span_12  left\">\n\t<div style=\"\" class=\"vc_col-sm-8 wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col child_column padding-4-percent inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"  data-using-bg=\"true\" data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"true\" data-bg-color=\"#8a8ace\" data-bg-opacity=\"0.2\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" ><div class=\"column-bg-overlay-wrap column-bg-layer\" data-bg-animation=\"none\"><div class=\"column-bg-overlay\" style=\"opacity: 0.2; background-color: #8a8ace;\"><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3 style=\"color: #49479d;text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading vc_do_custom_heading\" >Free Speech at the Supreme Court of Canada: Hansman v. Neufeld<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<p>In 2016, British Columbia\u2019s Ministry of Education rolled out SOGI 123, an educational initiative promoting inclusion of students based on sexual orientation and gender identity. A school board trustee in Chilliwack, Barry Neufeld, spoke out against the program with discriminatory and transphobic comments. In response, Glen Hansman, a teacher and gay man, defended students by calling Neufeld\u2019s remarks \u201cbigoted,\u201d \u201ctransphobic,\u201d and \u201chateful\u201d in media interviews.
